How to make Kombucha

Kombucha is a fermented drink that has been around for centuries  made with tea, sugar, bacteria and yeast.

This beverage, called the “Immortal Health Elixir” by the ancient Chinese is attributed with several health benefits as:

•Liver detoxification

•Improved pancreas function

•Increased energy

•Better digestion

•Improved mood (helps with anxiety/depression)

•Reducing Candida (yeast)

•Helps nutrient assimilation

Kombucha is a powerful antibacterial agent because of the type of bacteria found in it.  Drinking the live cultures actually destroys bad bacteria responsible for infections.

We love to drink Kombucha, it support a healthy gut, it’s loaded with vitamins B, it has a good source of antioxidants, probiotics and glucaric acid AND it’s an healthy alternative to sodas and other junk drinks.

That’s my pink (strawberries Kombucha). Read bellow how to make it yourself.

 

To get started brewing Kombucha at home, you will need:

  • a starter Culture (also known as a SCOBY,or Symbiotic Colony of Bacteria and Yeast, or mother) 
  • green or black tea
  • white sugar (substitutes sugar like stevia and xylitol do not work, because the sugar is the food for the bacteria)

STEPS:

1. Make green or black tea and combine the sugar until dissolved in a glass jar.


2. Cool the mixture to 68-85ºF and remove the tea bags (or strain the loose tea leaves). The longer the tea is left in the liquid, the stronger the tea will be.
3. Add an active kombucha SCOBY with some starter liquid from a previous batch to the tea. If the SCOBY is not the same size as the container, don’t worry, it will grow to fill the container as it ferments.


4. Cover the jar with a tight-weave towel or coffee filter and secure with a rubber band (to protect it from insect falling in).


5. Allow the mixture to sit undisturbed at 68-85°F, out of direct sunlight, for 7-30 days, or to taste. The longer the kombucha ferments, the less sweet and more vinegary it will taste.

………WAIT …… WAIT …… WAIT (I like to keep mine fermenting  for more or less 2 weeks). I would taste it and if it’s too sweet, I would give it more days to ferment.
6. Once at your taste, pour finished kombucha off the top of the jar into airtight jars or bottles for consuming.

7. Add fresh or frozen fruits to flavor or enjoin plain. I love ginger/lime, or strawberries, or blueberries but you can really add anything once the SCOBY is taken away. Do not add fruits or juice in the jar with the SCOBY, it would kill it !

8. Cover tightly and let sit an additional 1-2 days until carbonated. 

9. Store in the refrigerator in airtight containers.

Retain the SCOBY and enough liquid from the bottom of the jar to use as starter tea for the next batch and repeat steps 1-Every patch will give you a new SCOBY. We like to give our away to friend to share the benefit of this amazing healthy drink.

We will be doing some empowering Pranayama (breathing) for opening your heart center, and Asana (postures) with breath to build your courage, energy, and attract love.

Then we will close our circle with a meditation to realize your power as a woman, honoring the light within while expecting Miracles. The power of now.

ButterFly Effect 2015

What is really the ButterFly Effect about ? …

You probably heard about The Butterfly Effect ? The amazing WaterWoman Movement bringing ladies together in a non-competitive gathering celebrating community and love of the ocean, while instilling confidence in women of all ages and skill sets. Well it’s much more than that!

The ButterFly Effect (BE) is actually about spreading the message of love, compassion and kindness. Women are getting together to empower each other and the hope is that this will carry over into their everyday lives.

Every woman has her own unique set of talents both on the water and off.

The Butterfly Effect is about women sharing their personal resources generously with others through their communal participation in ocean sports. It is a day to honour those abilities and accomplishments.

True presence allows us to see beyond external layers of difference and identify the core oneness we share with everyone else on this planet. When you recognize the interconnectedness of everything, compassion flows naturally.

Giving back and making a difference is what it’s all about.

Anyone can help cleaning the beach along with the butterflies on the morning of the event. It’s a simple and fun way to give back to the community that we are privileged to live and work in.

A raffle, silent and live auctions will be held, at Eze bar in Cabarete hoping to surpassed last year’s efforts, raising for The DREAM Project. The DREAM gives a chance to all children and youth in the Dominican Republic to learn and realize their full potential through transformative education programs that combat the effects of poverty.

The 7th Annual Butterfly Effect Cabarete, Dominican Republic will take place on July 11th 2015.

Michelle Bourdeau is the owner and head therapist at Andari Spa in Cabarete. She has been practicing massage and spa therapy for 15 years in the Dominican Republic. She is an avid windsurfer and has been teaming up with Tatiana to organize the Butterfly Effect in cabarete for 7 years now.

International Yoga Day on Summer Solistice

Did you know that Sunday, June 21st is International Yoga Day AND the Summer Solstice?

The United Nations has declared 21st June as the International Yoga Day, which will be celebrated all over the world. For us every day is yoga day. However to respect this special day (the concept of which was suggested by Guruji) in a talk in Bangalore sometime in 2011- 2012, to respect Guruji, we have thought of a special practice program for this day.

21st June 2015 – will be celebrated as International yoga day throughout the world.

Celebrate this wonderful day with us!

We will have a simultaneous worldwide meditation session to experience Earth as one organism in sync with its inhabitants and will meditate together and express a higher level of consciousness that can only be achieved in unison.

With renewed energy of the Summer Solstice all things are possible.

Meditation, have you heard about mindful meditation?

Meditation can help our well-being; being a better person in our daily life, but also can help keeping our mind focus, calm and clear (while battling for waves in surfing for exemple).

At blossom, we believe that the primary purpose of exercice is to feel strong, good, and healthy. But what about the wellbeing of our mind? Well, since we started practicing daily mindful meditation and joyful mindfulness, we realized that meditation and exercising have one big similarity: both can improve the quality of our life. –by gaining physical ability while exercising and gaining mental abilities when practicing mindful meditation.

Meditation is the practice of focusing the mind. Meditation is about living in the present and ‘detoxing’ from the constant over-stimulation around us.
